Famous Ah Leng Char Koay Teow – Penang

Fried Koay Teow a.k.a Char Koay Teow is one of the best hawker delicacies in Penang. Penang is famous for its Char Koay Teow. You can easily spot a Char Koay Teow stall in any coffee shop, hawker center and also food court in Penang. It can be consider as a “MUST EAT” category for tourist and most of them would love it. Although I am born in Penang but I must admit that I am not a fan of Char Koay Teow. I didn’t specifically like it or dislike it.

A lot of people came to Penang and wanted to try good and nice Char Koay Teow. There are so many stalls in Penang but which one is the best? If you ask a local people, mostly they will tell you Lorong Selamat, Sister Char Koay Teow or Ah Leng Char Koay Teow. I didn’t like Lorong Selamat Char Koay Teow because of the stall owner attitude. The Aunty is so damn snobbish and damn LANSI. Damn it !!!

If you would want to have good Char Koay Teow, I would suggest you to Famous Ah Leng Char Koay Teow. Recently, Fly fm just awarded Ah Leng as the best Char Koay Teow in Malaysia. The stall is located opposite Honolulu Café which previously is Federal Cinema (Lian Bang Cinema). The stalls open from morning till afternoon around 2.30pm. I was there on the last weekend and I would say I enjoy it very much.

When ordering the uncle normally will ask you do you want a normal one or a special one? The special one cost RM8, but trust me is worth it. The special Char Koay Teow had additional big prawns and mantis prawn (Lai Niu Ha). To my understanding Ah Leng is the only one that had mantis in Char Koay Teow.

The Koay Teow are fried together with other ingredients to a perfect level. The Koay Teow, prawns and mantis are just nice, not over fried. You still can feel the juiciness and the crispy of the prawn. From the picture you can see that the prawn is really in XL size. The prawn is really mouthwatering and together with the koay teow it was just perfect. Ah Leng Char Koay Teow tasted very well because of mantis was added into it. The sweetness of the mantis had gone into the koay teow itself. When I order, I had asked for more chili to be added in, I love spicy food. I myself had eaten two plates and I really enjoy it very much.

Overall, I did enjoy my lunch very much over here. Although I dare not say that it was the best Char Koay Teow in Malaysia, but I would say it was one of the best in Penang. If you are in Penang, I highly recommend that you should try Ah Leng Char Koay Teow. It was a little expensive (RM 8) but to me it is worth because of the huge portion of prawn and mantis. I would definitely go back for it and will introduce to my outstation friends. Famous Ah Leng Char Koay Teow, yummy !!!!

Makan King's ratings = 8.75 out of 10

Cheers,

Coincidently there is another stall with mantis prawn also called Ah Leng (not sure if they learned from one another) as this stall is also quite well known, along Kimberly Street.

I've eaten at Sisters twice and Lorong Selamat twice (by force). Being from Penang I don't recommend either. Personal preference opposite Pulau Tikus police station and Penang Road near Ban Hin Bee (old school CKT).

Ah Leng char kuew tiao so far the best i had in Penang. this evaluation include taste and also service level. the prawns are big if you order extra (keh liao or kar liu). Located at Jln Dato' Keramat opposite(across the street) of Honolulu Cafe. Its merely a humble stall selling impressive stuff, if you go to Lorong Selamat (the Sisters Stall), that is by far more famous but please be prepare to get "commented" if you dont want to queue or customize your order - that was it used to be, i dont know the condition now cos it was my first and last visit at Lorong Selamat there.

That Lorong Selamat CKT Super Lansi... That aunty wearing over sized goggles to CKT.. and the best part is she asked the customers to queue in line all self service !! And the most DAMM thing is her wok is broken with a hole... forget about this stall.

Will try This Ahleng CKT soon.. Good work Makan Kings !

I Agree that Penang served good CKT...

But don`t forget that KL also have good CKT....
Recently I found a stall in Puchong at Pusat Bandar Puchong (Everyday Foodcourt). Doing very well in business...
The stall name is Redhot Fried Kuay Teow.

They not only selling Fried Kuay Teow. They also have very good Fried Rice. Exsample - Seafood Pineapple, Duck Egg Fried Rice, Original Pineapple Fried Rice and Pineapple Chicken Fried Rice.

I notice that in the weekday, they fry with two woks (3 worker)... and weekend with 3 woks (5 wrokers)... Sometimes, even 3 woks.. still got to wait... I can say.. WOW !!! soo many customers ....
Business start from 6 till midnight... I NEVER SEE THEY STOP FRYING...!!! Fry & fry & fry & fry....

The way how they fry are very fast.... 1 plate CKT less than 1 min....CArzy man.... How they do it ? See yourself....

HOW IS THE TASTE LIKE? Damm nice.... really looked Taste like Penang Style... I can say .... 8.5 /10.

Although worker in not local, but their standard are very good compare with other CKT stall..
I can say, They are well trained.

Another very impress thing to me is... this stall have it own fried kuay teow WEBSITE.
hahahahaaaaaa.....
check out this...

The "Ah Leng" char koay teow on Dato Keramat used to be at Kimberly Street but they sold that stall together with the name to the new owner before moving. So, don't be fooled by the one on Kimberly Street. They might have the same name but it's totally different. The one in Dato Keramat is the original one.

I do not think Ah Leng char koay teow is nice, there is nothing special and the koey teow is too wet. Will give it a 3/10. Still prefer the one in Pulau Tikus.

Tried it. Best Fried Kuay Teow. Love the prawns, the spice. The fact that it is not oliy makes you feel less guilty when you want 2 plates for yourself! One thing to note...you need to wait at least 20 minutes for your kuay teow. enjoy
