On Location!!! - Kuching - Kolo Mee and Cha Kueh @ Kenyalang Park Market

Kolo mee! The single most famous food in Kuching besides Laksa Sarawak. Went for supper with a friend last night. Went to the Kenyalang Park market.
First, some information on kolo mee. It is just noodles, blanched in boiling water, mixed with some pork oil and fried shallot/garlic oil and topped with minced meat and barbequed pork. The difference with this and the wantan mee that is popular in west Malaysia is, they do not use dark soy sauce and water is not added to the noodles when served.

Ok, the picture above is the kolo mee. You can also have it with flat noodles, kuey tiaw, bee hoon, etc. This particular kolo mee is very good. Nice and smooth and very fragrant from the various oils used. One thing about kolo mee, the barbequed pork is not as nice as those used in wantan mee. The variety here is a very dry barbequed pork. Unlike the one in wantan mee, where it is fatty and moist.

Now the picture above. This is called cha kueh or fried raddish cake. This particular serving contains two types of cha kueh. The one on the left is the one fried with eggs and chai poh (savoury) and the one on the right is the one fried with sweet soy sauce (sweet).
The cha kueh here is amazing!! Especially the sweet one. Fried just right and the raddish cake are cut into uniform bite pieces so that its easy to eat with toothpicks. You really need to taste it to believe it. It really is something else!

All I get here is Sarawak Mee Kolok from Mamee instant noodle. I did not know about this when I was in Kuching last time.

BTW, we have Sarawak Cha Chu mee here in Tesco food court. It taste really nice, with prawns and fish, some soupy soup. Wonder what you call it there? Cha = fry, Chu = cook? Correct ah? One day I blog it to show you.

You should try the "AH Peet" kolo mee at Expert Food court (next to Lian Kee Commercial Centre).Their kolo mee is reputably the best in town. Another one is the "Da Wan Gung" (Big Bowl) mee specialty shop at Jalan Ang Cheng Ho.
Opening times: Ah Peet- morning 7am to 10am (approx)
evening 5.30pm-7/8pm. Their business is really good, so do go early to avoid dissappointment.
Da Wan Gung opening times: 7.00 am to 12.00pm.
Have you tried the Sarawak Laksa yet?

The Kolo mee that you introduce look very good and nice. I have heard of Kolo mee using pork oil, the colour is different from the picture u show. I had tried Kuching Kolo mee and it taste nice, but no chance to tried the one using pork oil. I agree that kuching food is nice, but i dont agree that kuching food cant be beaten. I had went to many places, and every place have their own famous types of foods. Even I am from penang I dare not say that penang food cant be beaten. hehe ...

penang kia,

The kolo mee is really good! Should come to Kuching to try next time.

Agree with you. Not one place has the best food. Everywhere has its specialty. One of the Makan Kings is in Penang. Wait for reviews on Penang food soon (hopefully).
