On Location!!! - Kuching - Laksa Sarawak @ Dong Guan

Went for breakfast at Dong Guan food court in Central Park (also known as 3rd Mile). Since we havent posted anything on Sarawak's famous Laksa, decided to try the Laksa stall here. Heard from some locals that it is quite good.

Above picture is the Sarawak Laksa. It consist of bee hoon, taugeh (bean sprouts), shreaded chicken, prawns and the Laksa soup. The one served here is quite good. The difference in this Laksa compared to the curry Laksa that is easily available in KL is the soup. It is spicy but doesnt have the curry taste. Have no idea how to explain the taste la. Its just GOOD! :D This particular one could be better though if they are more generous with the Laksa soup.

Also ordered a plate of cha kueh. This plate of cha kueh is pretty big compared to the standard ones. It looked quite good when it arrive at the table. Too bad the cha kueh here is bland. The raddish cake itself wasnt fried long enough and the seasoning was just off.

Makan Kings ratings = 7 out of 10 (Only rating the laksa)

I really wanna try the Sarawak Laksa, I dunno how it taste like cos i never tried B4, but it looks good from the picture. Obviously it is different from Penang Laksa. Penang Laksa doesnt used bee hoon and doesnt have prawn. I will try it next time when i am in kuching.

kuching laksa yummmm..so miss that. FYI if you live in the Klang Valley, there's a stall (kuching or Miri fella) selling that in Taman Megah (not in the MingTien foodcourt). 7-11 that row, all the way down to the "bend on the road". Coffee shop's an end lot shop. Stall's pretty popular and the laksa's good. =)

soowm - Yes, have heard that the beer is cheap. As for late night snacks menu, will work on a post for that.

penang kia - Yeap. The laksa in Kuching is totally different. Do try it the next time you are in Kuching. Will be going to a few other stalls. You can read them here in time.

diana - Thanks for the info. Will try this stall when back in KL. Do you happen to have the name of the stall?

I miss Sarawak Laksa. The secret to a good laksa is in the soup base. These days, I believe they sell the paste in concentrated form so that means you can cook it at home instead of travelling all the way to Sarawak for it. Try buying a pack before leaving Sarawak. They sell it in plastic bags about the size of a brick.

Sarawak laksa is meant to be served with thick gravy, and not soupy unlike Western Malaysians who prefer their curry/assam laksa with lots of soup. :o)

There used to be good Sarawak laksa in Alexis in Bangsar. Not sure if it's still there now.

My 2 cents.

Fatman Seoul,

Yeap. You can buy pre packaged concentrated laksa soup base. Tried it before. All you do is boil the stuff with water, add some coconut milk and some prawn shells and head and chicken bones if you like.

For authentic laksa sarawak in KL, go to Rasta stalls in Taman Tun (1 Utama entrance). The Laksa Sarawak stall opens today, 18 May 2007 and is branded as Laksa Sarawak Santubong. The cook is from Kuching, Sarawak and used to cook for the rich and famous in Kuching. Her sister is that lady that sells laksa sarawak from her home at Jalan Patinggan, Kuching. Promotional price per bowl is RM4.50. However was told that they would only be there for 2 months (due to technical issues) but will move to the Damansara Kim (near DSH, Taman Tun) stalls. Check it out and let us know how it rates.
